Because there's too many buildings or trees in the way causing you to lose or disrupt your signal. But since using these I have been able to contact upper Michigan ow even down into Ohio or in Pennsylvania or even in Canada and Wisconsin and Chicago. This will easily connect you to a bunch of different truckers or different people. Local to your area who have similar walkie talkies that are able to reach a distance.
